AVRDC – The World Vegetable Center endorses the Milan Protocol Initiatives and the causes it advocates for the world community to address. The Center believes the Milan Protocol is a germane platform to ensure nutritional security as an integral part of the efforts to eradicate hunger and achieve healthy lifestyles. The Milan Protocol reinforces the need to create sustainable agricultural practices and to end preventable food losses (physical and nutritional) by ensuring the adequate availability of vegetables and fruit for all as abundant sources of essential micronutrients for good health.

AVRDC – The World Vegetable Center is an international nonprofit research and development institute committed to alleviating poverty and malnutrition in developing countries through increased production and consumption of nutritious and health-promoting vegetables. As high-value crops and affordable sources of essential micronutrients, vegetables have the powerful potential to create employment opportunities, to generate income and to provide balanced diets for health, especially among women, children and vulnerable communities. The Center's research and development activities encompass the whole vegetable value chain, from seed to production to postharvest management to marketing and to consumption. The Center's genebank maintains, in perpetuity, the world's largest public sector collection of vegetable genetic resources with over 67,000 accessions representing more than 170 genera and 430 species for the benefit of current and future generations. The Center has built a solid global reputation for tropically-adapted, improved cultivars of vegetables as one of the cheapest, simplest and most effective technologies for farmers with limited resources to improve their vegetable production. Through developing and promoting the adoption of sustainable production systems that are safer for the growers and the environment, the Center strives to ensure that vegetable production is profitable and provides an adequate supply of affordable, healthy vegetables. To maximize the nutritional benefits of vegetables, the Center works on postharvest management and promotes use of optimal preparation and processing methods to maintain bioavailability of the nutrients. With its headquarters in Taiwan, the Center has regional offices for East and Southeast Asia in Thailand, for South Asia in India, for Eastern and Southern Africa in Tanzania, and for West and Central Africa in Mali. In addition, project and liaison offices are located in Cameroon, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Fiji, the Solomon Islands, and South Korea.
