The University of Adelaide - Australia
Cities are eating our farm land. But can a city feed its people?
Future predictions illustrate a sharp growth in world population, coinciding with a decrease in available farm land. This predicted scenario will have serious impacts on global food security. Urban agriculture is a promising solution to tackle this problem. Using the waste products of urban settlements and integrating them back into the food supply preserves resources and is an important step towards sustainable food production. However, there is a lack of information on growing crops in densely populated areas and reusing municipal waste products as fertilizer. This project will collect soil samples across the metropolitan area of Adelaide (South Australia) and analyse them in relation to soil health and safety. Additionally, land use metadata will be collected to gain insight into the city’s potential to grow crops. Altogether, we can make informed conclusions about the city’s potential to feed its people, as well as raise the profile of urban agriculture.
