An international competition for journalists launched by the BCFN in collaboration with the Thomson Reuters Foundation to choose the best articles, photos and videos on the subject of sustainable food.

An international prize is to be awarded to those journalists who are best able to communicate the issues of sustainable food through articles, videos and photographs. The Food Sustainability Media Award was launched by BCFN in collaboration with the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The targets are journalists from around the world, as well as bloggers and vloggers, looking to highlight the key paradoxes in the food system: the coexistence of hunger and obesity; the overexploitation of natural resources and the use of agricultural land to produce biofuels rather than feed people; and the quantity of food wasted, from the field to the table, despite the fact that many people do not have enough to eat.

The power of the media
Food sustainability is a global problem and we believe that the media has a key role to play. By revealing and highlighting the paradoxes of the modern food system, the media can involve the general public and by guiding them to make more informed food choices, they can consequently help to create a fairer and more sustainable future”, states the competition description.
Launched at the 7th BCFN Forum, held in Milan on 1 December, the prize will be awarded by a panel of highly respected judges: nine experts from the media and sustainable agriculture sectors, including Laurie Goering, journalist specialising in the climate from the Thomson Reuters Foundation, Ruth Oniang’o, Founder and Director of the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Mario Calabresi, Director of La Repubblica, one of Italy’s leading daily newspapers.

Categories and prizes
The three categories (written journalism, videos and photos) accept works which have already been published as well as original pieces. For published pieces, the prize is €10,000 for each winner, and for non-published content, an all-expenses paid training course will be awarded on the theme of sustainability at the Thomson Reuters Foundation and their work will be published via the channels of both Foundations.
The topic of climate change really struck a chord among my journalist colleagues, but not many of them offered readers a comprehensive overview of its effects, taking into account the impact it will have on agricultural production and the availability of food”, explained Laurie Goering at the BCFN Forum in Milan when presenting the prize. It is the visual or narrative impact of the story being told which really engages the reader (and this is therefore a key criteria for the judges when choosing the winners). This view was echoed by Mario Calabresi, who reiterated the need for quality journalism to overcome the challenge of informing the public. He told the audience gathered in the Aula Magna at Milan Bocconi University, “with the spread of new business models in the media sector, only quality journalism will survive, by having a real effect on people’s behaviour and talking about social change using engaging and innovative language”.
