Nutritional challenges, agriculture, food loss and waste

This report presents an analysis of the Italian agri-food system in three main areas: nutritional challenges, agriculture, food loss, and food waste.

The analysis was carried out using the Food Sustainability Index (FSI), a tool developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) with the Barilla Foundation (BCFN) to measure and monitor progress on the social, economic and environmental aspects of food sustainability.

It also highlights areas for improvement and good practices, with the aim of promoting dialog between stakeholders and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are all connected to healthy and sustainable food systems.

The report points out that, in Italy, along with a long life expectancy, there are alarming rates of overweight and physical inactivity and an abandonment of the Mediterranean diet. The agricultural sector faces challenges related to the impact on soil and water resources, the age of farmers and the absence of a strategy to promote investments in sustainable agriculture.

Furthermore, high levels of food waste per capita are addressed through innovative legislation, although there is no reduction target based on SDGs.

In this context, the promotion of sustainable agri-food systems is both the goal and the means for implementing the 2030 Agenda, and is one of the biggest and most important challenges of the 21st century. This undertaking requires an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between policy makers, businesses, research institutes and civil society.
