Madagascar fishermen cooperate in the fight against climate change

Thanks to the cooperation of the Swiss NGO Weconnex, the fishermen of the African island are learning new techniques to maintain and increase the value of fish, e.g. by joining cooperatives. In this way the fishermen have greater trade opportunities and can avoid heavy losses due to poor catches. The project also involves alternatives to fishing in the medium-term, in order to preserve the island’s fish stock.

Abu Dhabi invests in new agricultural technology

Abu Dhabi has approved a series of incentive packages worth over 2 billion euro to sustain agricultural technology projects, according to a declaration made by the Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan. The investment involves series of incentives to be assigned to local and international companies in the sectors of precision farming, agriculture robotics, bioenergy and indoor farming.

Great Britain could be struck by water scarcity

Notwithstanding the rain, Great Britain has water scarcity problems and difficulties in maintaining its water reserves. According to a government analysis, 28 percent of groundwater aquifers in England and up to 18 percent of rivers and reservoirs are being used in an unsustainable manner. The British use over 150 litres of freshwater per day.

Too many counterfeit drugs

According to British doctors, there has been an invasion of counterfeit and poor quality medicines, which are thought to kill hundreds of thousands of people each year, all over the world. Around 250,000 children a year are estimated to die after being treated with poor quality, or totally fake drugs.

In North Korea 11 million people are undernourished

The statement comes from the United Nation’s latest report. According to the agency, "chronic food insecurity and malnutrition is widespread” in North Korea, affecting some 11 million people. This amounts to 43 percent of the population. According to the report, one child out of five has rickets due to lack of access to food and to a well-balanced diet.

FAO, Italy and Sudan together to mitigate and adapt to climate change

The Ministry for the Environment has recently signed an agreement with FAO which envisages supplying technical support to the National Council for Environment of Sudan, and transforming the cooperation activities currently underway between Italy and Sudan into concrete projects and initiatives to be put into practice. Two projects have been approved for a total of 1,611,877 euro.
