Sonia Massari has been a scientific advisor to the Barilla Foundation since 2012. In particular, she has worked on projects for young people and training (BCFNYes!, Milan Protocol, Youth Manifesto, Alumni group, Progetto Scuole). Sonia is Academic Director of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Food Studies programs in Rome and the first and current Director of Gustolab International Food Systems and Sustainability, the first Italian center for university study programs on the food supply chain, involving over 15 US universities and international establishments.
She teaches the “Sociology of Change” (Designing Emerging Scenarios - Focus on Food Systems) course at ISIA Design in Rome, a specialized degree program in System Design. She works with Roma Tre University: Master’s Degree in the Language of Tourism and Intercultural Communication and Degree in Gastronomic Sciences and Culture and since 2017 she has lectured on the “Sustainability Design Thinking” course at the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies.
Since 2012, she has been an advisor to research centers, public and private companies and foundations as a researcher, designer and trainer (Master Food Design&Innovation SPD, JRC Ispra and Seville - Joint Research Centers of the European Commission, IAL, Sunstar, RAI, University of Macerata, SDGAcademy, Rome Business School....).
In 2012, she won the “Women and Technology”: “Women Innovation Award” for women involved in the innovation of food and nutrition and in 2014 she won the international Innovative Research in International Education, NAFSA award. She is a board member of ASFS (Association for the Study of Food and Society), European representative of FDXE (Educational Network on Food Design) and Ambassador of WeforExpo. She is a member of the editorial team of the International Journal of Food Design, Frontiers and Temes de Disseny journal. Since 2015, she has been a member of the ADI Committee on food design, and since 2016 she has coordinated the ADI Index committee on Food Design. She edits the monthly Design and Food section of Gamberorosso magazine.
