Having collaborated to the writing of both the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA) report and the Integrated Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) report, I confirm the importance and urgency of the goals proposed by the Milano Protocol. It is time to develop a more holistic understanding of the nexus between food, energy, water, and land use when assessing the effects that human actions have on the well being of societies and the health of ecosystems. This better understanding has to be followed by an effective action plan. For this reason I endorse this initiative.
