When I hear that 9% of the population of my country [Italy] suffers from hunger, I feel ashamed. Due to the choices made by politicians in recent decades, due to the contradictions regarding waste, due to the glaring contrast with the lifestyles of people who have a lot, which are now strongly inclined toward ephemeral and superfluous things. Due to the selfishness of market choices which are absolutely not oriented toward an equal distribution... The real reversal of the trend will be noticed when world hunger is recognized as a 'political'issue worldwide, in the noblest sense of the term. It consoles me to think that the solution to this problem, which is the mother of all problems, 'is worthwhile'for humanity. But a long view is needed. It would only take 3.2 billion dollars a year to free 66 million school-age children from hunger. For the well-off world, 3.2 billion dollars is really very little compared to the return it would produce: less than one year of IMU [Italian property tax], a low percentage of that squandered by Italian politicians, 0.16% of Italy's debt for 66 million children to be nourished properly. The future looms large and is also threatening. The solution to lessen the threats lies in a systematic approach to the problem. I especially don't like some attitudes of resignation in regard to hunger, wars and famine. The future of the planet still depends on us, it hasn't been written yet. The world does not have a destiny, misfortune does not exist: humanity must make the right choices for its future before the future imposes itself on humanity. There is significant room for action but there certainly is a contradiction between increase in income and consumption and the worsening of the ecological footprint. All this leads to a major revolution in our civilization.

Eataly was created with the intention of refuting the assumption that says quality products are only available to a limited circle of privileged people, since they are often expensive or hard to find. Thus Eataly offers the best of artisanal production at sustainable prices, cutting the products'distribution chain to the bone and creating a direct relationship between the producer and the end user, skipping over the various intermediate links in the chain.

The objective is to increase the percentage of people who nourish themselves knowledgably, choosing first-quality products and paying particular attention to the sources and the processing of raw materials.

The philosophy that Eataly has adopted in this sense is two-fold: on one hand, it offers products, either through distribution or through a food service outlet, while on the other hand, it offers education, organized through cooking courses, tastings, meetings with master chefs, great vineyards or craftsmen, education that is free for children and senior citizens. This last aspect summarizes Eataly's true originality and is the starting point to inspire the proper perception of quality in the consumer, in the conviction that 'eating well helps you to live better.'
