A better understanding of food security and sustainability comes with careful analysis and planning of food systems at the regional landscape.

Small island ecosystem is fragile and vulnerable, yet it provides unique services critical for improved quality of life. Problems on food security, at the regional scale, stem from the imbalances in the distribution of food resources, not to mention the impact of value addition that is often skewed against the consumers and even the producers. Ecosystem instability driven by much of human unsustainable exploitation of resources and impacts of climate change only makes the situation worse. Regional food systems analyses through the lens of small islands spatial linkages can guide in providing sustainable options and better decisions in achieving resources use equity. Local island communities, through local government agenda, can be better informed of food and other resources flow thus guiding them to sustainable and food secured path. Bearing away from the vicious notion of island communities dealing with poverty, food insecurity and environmental degradation can still be achieved.
